The World of Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy is a complete clinical practice on its own. Phlebotomists are required to be precise accurate in their work. This practice involves the extraction of blood from blood vessels that is required for further medical examining and tests. A phlebotomist is therefore somebody who pierces injection into the blood vein of the patient and takes out blood from that. And phlebotomy is simply the whole procedure of doing such a task.

Phlebotomy is undertaken by people who usually require some sort of examination of their blood. Most often people with high levels of red blood cells in their body or having excess amount of iron their body need to visit phlebotomists every now and then. It is the blood extraction that they have to get done in order for them to stay health. Extra amounts of iron in the body can damage the liver and can have other serious implications as well.

A phlebotomist is required to take care of a lot of things. For example, he or she should make sure that the blood that is taken out for extraction is stored in the most proper and safest of all ways since this blood has to be transported for medical examination at a pathological lab. At the same time, he has to manage and organize various samples of blood taken from patients through out the day. At times the phlebotomist would also have to take care of maintaining the data base and might also have to do some sort of clerical work related to the lab. In this way, there are a lot of extra responsibilities which are directly related to the phlebotomist's profession.

The phlebotomist has to make sure that his patients are dealt with the proper way. In that he has to soothe out and calm down the patients who might be afraid of needle pricks. He has to work as a psychologist as well. Also, he has to make sure that the patient is not bruised by the prick for which he needs to precise and accurate while puncturing the vein. Proper eye harmonization and excellence of focus is therefore another responsibility of the phlebotomist.

The most important task of the phlebotomists also comes to the way he handles his apparatus. Since it is a matter of human blood sampling, he or she has to ensure that the apparatus and equipment being used is new and perfectly sterilized. This is the major concern of patients these days as well as the incidence of blood related infections are increasing due to negligence at hospitals particularly during times of blood sampling.

On the whole phlebotomy is a profession that needs to be taken up like a real professional and requires precision and accuracy at its best.
