DEFINITIONS
Priapism is a painful erection and settled and not related to sexual arousal and satisfaction.
CAUSE
Priapism can occur in all age groups, including newborn babies.
Priapism in children are usually found in patients with leukemia. White blood cells obstruct or impede the flow of blood from the penis resulting Priapism.
Children who suffer from sickle cell disease may also experience Priapism.
Other causes of Priapism in children is trauma, either on the penis itself or on the area below the penis (perineum) and spinal cord injury.
In adults, causes of Priapism can be known can not.
One possible cause is the sickle-cell disease (as many as 30% of cases). Reported that 42% of adults who suffer from sickle cell disease and 64% of children who suffer from sickle cell disease, in the end will have Priapism.
Blood clots can also cause the occurrence of Priapism.
