Health Economics, Health Economics from the Side

Health Economics, Health Economics from the Side

Health economics is a branch of economics that applies economic principles to the phenomena and problems of health.
Health economics itself focuses on two things, namely: the mobilization of funds and efficient health financing. Based on 2008 WHO report itself mentions that the cost of health expenditure worldwide is increasing with the average achieved> 2 times the economic growth rate. Factors that cause, among others: The rise of life expectancy associated with high rates of chronic disease that requires long-term care and costly medical procedures, medical technology & research of new drugs that require expensive costs which ultimately must be borne by the patient; Increasing demographic accompanied with an increased standard of living that encourages investment in preventive therapy (prevention).

To further socialize about it, then on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 yesterday at the Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta held a workshop on media events Health Economics. Meanwhile, Health Economics seminar & workshop itself will be held on 13-14 January 2010 held at the same hotel. The event which is the result of cooperation between Indonesia PT.Novartis with FKM Universitas Indonesia will be followed by the researchers, government, health industry as well as other health practitioners. While for the speaker itself presents several resource persons both from within & outside the country, such as: Prof. Hasbullah Thabrany, MPH, DrPH, of the FKM UI, Diana I. Brixner, RPH, PhD as Director of Outcomes Research University of Utah, USA; Lieven Annemans, PhD, MMan, MSc from the University of Ghent (UGent) and the University of Brussels (VUB), and the other speakers.

In Indonesia, according to data from the Center for Health Financing and Assurance, Indonesian per capita health expenditure rose from Rp. 184 000 in 2002 to Rp. 494 000 in the year 2009, or practically climbed to almost three times that number. According to health economists from the FKM UI namely Prof. own. Hasbullah, this is a reasonable line with the changing demographic, epidemiological and increase in life expectancy. So he continued "to be able to meet the health needs of quality and cost effective, better health policies through appropriate economic evaluation."

According to Lieven Annemans, PhD, MMan, MSc own "Often, drugs are used, actions or operations that run diagnostic tests performed to the patient proved to be the thing that is not really needed by the patient. While the reasons for this waste of potential ineligibility is due to health providers to conduct a scientific analysis as well as the predominant or a payment system known as 'fee for service' "where more and more types of service or the service will cost or fee will also be higher .

Therefore, Diana I. Brixner, RPH, PhD as Director of Outcomes Research University of Utah, USA introduced the concept of Health Economics that can help save healthcare costs are high quality and appropriate. He said: "Whether the past, health policies are often based on the level of efficacy and efficacy of therapy for patients without considering the cost factor at all. However, this analysis does not fit anymore with the current situation. The high population and lack of allocation of health financing in developing countries requiring a efektiviitas analysis and efficiency of health innovations in the real world. "

For the time being in Indonesia itself, this is a new discourse. While in practice, Health Economics and require full support from government, academics, researchers and other medical communities in order to solve current health problems, particularly concerning the use of drugs. Expected to strengthen the knowledge of the Health Economics in the future this may create economic evaluation experts who can promote the establishment of equitable health systems and efficient in Indonesia.
